Get Into the Nutcracker Spirit!

Ahhhhh, Nutcracker season. The sound of the Sugar Plum Fairy music drifting through a studio or the thunderous and triumphant Battle Scene—it's a magical time of year. For us dancers, it's also one of the busiest, most exciting, and downright exhausting seasons. Whether you're a Snowflake, Flower, Clara, or even a Mouse, preparing for The Nutcracker takes dedication and a whole lot of self-care.

I've had my fair share of Nutcracker memories, especially performing in New York City Ballet’s legendary George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. The days were hectic, specifically in the lower concourse of the David H. Koch Theatre. It was the most unforgettable experience. I vividly remember the spicy scent of Got2B Glued hairspray filling the air–my fondest memory of Marielle–the gigantic and unflattering bright red circles painted on our faces (depending on our role, of course), parents squished shoulder to shoulder, cheering like it was the Olympics, as we tried to out-fouetté each other in our little competitive circles, all hyped up on adrenaline and probably too much holiday sugar.

Nutcracker season is demanding, no matter the company or studio. Between rehearsals, performances, and school, burnout can creep in faster than a mischievous Mouse King. Looking back, it's wild how my body managed to handle all those poor habits back then. As an older (and hopefully wiser) teenager, I've realized how important it is to spread awareness on properly taking care of your body. Because trust me, it makes a difference! So here's how to keep your holiday spirit intact and your body and mind ready to take on the stage:)

  1.  Prioritize rest: With many rehearsals and performances, pushing through and sacrificing sleep is tempting. DONT. Your body is your instrument, and it MUST recover.

  2. Fuel your body wisely: We're all guilty of grabbing quick snacks during this hectic time, but The Nutcracker demands stamina. Balancing these snacks with protein, carbs, and healthy fats is crucial.

  3. Stretch and Strengthen: With adrenaline pumping, it's easy to forget water. Keep a bottle of water with you at ALL TIMES

  4. Find Joy in the Chaos: Amidst the late-night rehearsals and quick costume changes, don't forget why we do this. For me, the moment the curtain rises and the audience gasps at the shimmering snow or elegance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, it's all worth it. Cherish those moments!

Nutcracker season is a rite of passage for dancers. It's demanding, yes, but also full of magical memories that will last a lifetime. I'll never forget the bonds I've made backstage and the thrill of stepping into a role.

So, as you take on your Nutcracker journey this year, remember to care for yourself. The holidays are about joy, and there's no greater joy than sharing your passion with an audience !!

Happy Nutcracker season, everyone. Merde– and don't forget to stretch!
